KRISHNAMMA PENTALU

The Simaneli sect of Balija Naidus conduct a ceremony called Krishnamma Pentalu, the day before the marriage. This is to evoke the blessings of a Sumangali on the bride.
This ceremony involves worshipping the soul of a married woman. This is usually a Sumangali (married

woman) from the family who has died. All the rituals of a shradh or memorial ceremony are performed except the lighting of the homam (sacred fire) and repeating mantrams from the Vedas. It is believed that if the soul is not propitiated this way, she will cause harm to those performing the marriage ceremony.

As part of this ceremony, new clothes are bought and offered along with money, betel and other auspicious items to a married woman. She eats before the rest of the gathering.

The Krishnamma Pentalu ensures that the marriage will take place happily and everything will move forward smoothly.
